My Life Story: How I Got Here

SUSA Marketing Laughing no background.pn

When I turned three years old, my mom gave me the birthday party of my dreams.

She hired a magician to perform for my family and friends; that day changed my life. At age three, I determined my career goal in life.

I spent the next four years buying every magic set the toy store carried and performing for whoever would watch. I finally had my "big break" in 2nd grade when my classmate asked me to perform at her party. After the performance, she reached into her piggybank and pulled out whatever she had: $34.00.

My first paid gig.

Realizing I could get paid for what I would do for free I printed business cards, launching my company, The Magic of David Rosenstein, faster than you can say "Abracadabra." Business skyrocketed over the next eight years, and I quickly became a top magicians in NY/NJ/CT tri-state area.

2006: "I want to be a magician when I grow up"

2015: "Or maybe not..."

Throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I performed for thousands of people and traveled the country with my show. In the middle of my junior year, however, I used my skillset in a different way.

While my peers felt angst from the college process and standardized tests, I found myself relatively calm and with a surprising amount of free time on my hands.

I approached the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence in November 2014 asking to partner for a large-scale benefit show. Winning over their initially reluctant team, I produced "An Evening of Magic" with an all-star cast, attracted over 500 audience members, and raised $4,000+, exceeding all expectations.

While planning the show, I had an epiphany. As much as I enjoyed performing on stage, I equally enjoyed the behind-the-scenes marketing plans as I coordinated social media, PR, and guerilla marketing logistics. Realizing I don't want to pursue magic full time, I was hooked.

2016: "Marketing. That's what I want."

Starting the University of Maryland as an out-of-state student, I wanted my fresh start to be an opportunity for my peers to know me as a lover of marketing, not a magician.

Hiding that I did magic hoping to shape the perceptions of others, I seized campus opportunities that would enable me to grow as a marketer right from the start. I established my personal brand after joining the American Marketing Association, becoming a tour guide, and working as a teaching assistant all in my freshman year.

2017: "Marketing is my life, and I love it."

To me, marketing means energizing others over a product/brand that I care about. Throughout college, I have made it my mission to find these products and brands that I care and rally more excitement from others

On campus, I've joined a variety of clubs that align with this vision. As a campus tour guide, I get to invigorate excitement for UMD, the best school on earth. As the President of our American Marketing Association collegiate chapter, I inspire the next generation of marketing leaders to love marketing career opportunities. As a recruiter for the QUEST Honors Program, I get to share the magic of the program with prospective students.

Beyond my school, I have actively sought out other professional marketing development opportunities. For two years now, I have attended Out For Undergrad's Marketing Conference to engage with diverse marketing professionals and students from across the country. In addition, I was chosen as a Marketing EDGE Collegiate Summit Scholar to attend their 4-day data-driven marketing conference in NYC with 80 other student leaders, and have attended multiple conferences since.

I love learning about the current industry landscape. I love watching marketing roles evolve with technology trends.

I love marketing, and I could not be happier.
